“We have lowered our learning walls so (the children) can engage with them freely as they learn, and they get to navigate the Smart Board themselves. The children are more engaged, and their attention span is better, and it led to deeper conversations with teachers about what they are learning. It is about staying competitive in the market and continuing to develop the best type of learning strategies for kids.“

Sink or Swim: A Lesson in Perseverance and Business Ownership

June 30, 2015
Children's Lighthouse Franchise

It’s often said that when you start your own business, it’s sink or swim.

Ken and Diane Kay weren’t banking on taking that adage literally.

Retired teachers, the Kays had been dreaming of taking a four-year sailing trip since the early days of their careers in education. They began their seaward journey from California to Australia, stopping in more than 20 new and exotic spots, including Mexico, Bora Bora, Fiji and New Zealand. But then disaster struck.

Somewhere between New Zealand and Australia, hurricane-sized winds ripped through their 16-foot boat, sending a visitor on the trip overboard. Ken pulled him out of the water with his own hands.

After returning from their journey, the Kays decided that life was too short to spend doing anything other than what they were passionate about. They signed on with Children’s Lighthouse Learning Centers upon their return, bringing their education experience to the next level through business ownership.

Their challenge in open waters showed them that no obstacle is big enough to truly stand in their way, and those are the lessons they impart to every student and staff member they work with.
